New Beginnings
2010: An interesting season commences.
The beginning of the new season of F1 is just around the corner, in fact the Bahrain practice sessions run even as I write this. A season in which “The Iceman” will be so dearly missed, by one and all of his fans, including me (Miss you Kimi).
Although, I take comfort from the fact that at least, if I don’t have someone to cheer for, I definitely have someone to cheer against….Yes, Schumi, Welcome back!!!
So, what can we look forward to in the coming 19 races? Well, let’s see – 4 former Champions (and quite a few prospective ones), 3 new teams, Return of a certain famous name to the grid (oh yes…Senna is back!!!), the 2nd Indian driver debuts in F1, pit-stops without refueling ( What’s the point?) and yes, the “Silver Arrows” are back after 55 years (Well Mercedes is here again!!!).
The season promises to be as competitive as any in the recent years; both the titles will be closely fought for - from Bahrain to Abu Dhabi. The new rules will definitely test the finesse of the drivers’ ability to nurse their tyres and the new points system will definitely open up the field.
The big question is - Who to expect the big results from?
Ferrari definitely will be hungry. They barely fed last year and will be keen to set their record straight, with the two potential champions in their ranks. Fernando will definitely cherish the opportunity to have a car which actually might be able to match his speed (He drove the wheels off his Renault man!!!), and if this happens a third title may not be too far. Felipe, now fully recuperated from his terrible crash, will be raring to go and honestly speaking he deserves so much more than he has achieved (I hope this year his same old story doesn’t repeat - So close, yet so far!!!).
McLaren seem to have overcome their problems from last year and have a great car this time around (Go McLaren Go!!!). However, they will have to contend with the two champion Brits and will be praying that a repeat of 2007 does not happen here (Kimi, you beauty, what a steal it was, right at the end….Still gives me Goosebumps!!!). With Button looking to defend his title (Are you kidding me?), Lewis definitely will look to do exactly what was done to him (After all; Revenge is a dish best served COLD!!!).
And, ahh the surprise package of last year are returning with Mercedes and they have a seven time champion in their ranks. I won’t be silly to write him off yet. Although an eight title seems far-fetched, Schumi will definitely be on the podium on a considerable number of occasions. Rosberg will definitely get a lot to learn competing with him (I just hope he does not have the same fate like Piquet!!!).
Red Bull’s turnaround certainly impressed me last year and it will be interesting to see their run this year. They have two really good drivers in Vettel and Webber who will be looking for serious recognition amongst some really big names.
Williams and Renault will be looking to regain some of their former glory. Will the experience of Barrichello help Williams bounce back, after two seasons which were poles apart from each other – definitely worth looking out for. Renault are definitely on the slide since their Fernando days and Kubica’s speed helping them climb that steep slope seems unrealistic.
I think Force India need a special mention. They showed immense improvement last season and they might just be getting in their groove in the F1 arena (By the way, Sutil just went fastest in the Practice 1). Sutil has shown in the past that he’s a dark horse, and who knows, maybe Liuzzi may spring some surprises this year. They will be gunning for a middle position this year, and with visible improvements and 3 new teams, I won’t be ruling out their chances.
Not much to expect from Toro Rosso or BMW Sauber, I think (Apart from Consistency – yes, they’ll be rooting for the bottom places consistently, but will have to compete for it with the newbies!!!).
Well, Lotus is the only new team which seems capable of some mid-finishes. They seem focused as a team and have two fighters behind the wheel. The experience of Trulli and Heikki, combined with the fresh enthusiasm of the new team, might just be the right recipe for a few podium finishes (Or a recipe for disaster?)
Virgin do not have much to showcase (Except, probably an interesting team name!!!). Glock will look to a "Fernando" with their machine, but then he’s no Fernando (Will he prove me wrong?...I don’t think so!!!)
And finally, last and maybe the least: HRT have two drivers who will definitely attract a lot of attention this year, one because of his last name and the other because of his country. But, with no pre-season testing (one of their cars didn’t even manage to run in the Bahrain practice sessions…how ridiculous!!!), they will certainly be a force to reckon with (At the back of the grid!!!).
In all, only one thing seems certain: The 2010 season will be competitive - at both ends of the grid.
Who will I root for?…that’s a toughie (With Kimi gone). Still; can hardly wait for the real stuff to start tomorrow with the qualifying, and then, on Sunday, when the five red lights go off …….
